How to Join

 

Who?  Musicians 4th grade - age 21 (varies by ensemble) who participate in their school band or orchestra programs, if available.  Private study is encouraged.

About our program?  Rehearsals take place weekly during the school year on Sunday afternoons.  Most concerts will be on Sundays, with a few exceptions.  Please check our current concert season for more details.

How?  Complete and mail Application Form with a $15 non-refundable audition fee (not applicable to tuition).  Indicate the date and time of your preferred audition time.  Register early because auditions are scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Upon receipt of the application, a written confirmation of your audition time will be mailed to you.

When?  Auditions for the 2008-09 season will take place the week of May 12 - May 17, 2008.  Audition results will be mailed by early June.  If accepted into one of the ensembles, you must pay a $25 non-refundable reservation fee (not applicable to tuition) by July 1, to hold your place in the ensemble.

Where?  Arrive at least 20 minutes before your schedule time to register and warm up.  All auditions (except percussion) are at:

Placement?
Placement is competitive and is based on your audition score and the recommendation of the judges. Students will be judged on intonation, interpretation, tone, rhythm, techniques and scale proficiency. Grade and instrumentation needs of the ensemble are also considered.
 

What to prepare for your audition? (All instruments, except percussion.)

ALL INSTRUMENTS (Except Percussion)

Solo: You will be asked to perform a solo (3-5 minutes) of your choice that demonstrates your technical and artistic ability. The solo does not need to be memorized nor do you need an accompanist.

Scales: Taking into consideration your experience, you will be asked to play two scales, one of your choice and one chosen by the judges, in as many octaves as possible or comfortable, at the maximum controlled tempo. All scales have to be memorized.

1. Students in 10th grade and higher in the 2008-09 school year must prepare all major scales as well as the related melodic minor scales.

2. Students younger than 10th grade in the 2008-09 school year must prepare the following major keys: C, G, D, A, E, F, B flat, E flat, A flat.

3. In addition, Flutes only may be asked to play a chromatic scale.

Sight-reading: All students will be asked to sight-read appropriate to age.

PERCUSSION AUDITION

Percussion auditions will be at: UMKC Conservatory of Music

1. Students in 10th grade in the 2008-09 school year and higher must prepare three short solos (2-3 minutes) that demonstrate technical and artistic ability. One solo must be on a keyboard instrument (marimba, xylophone, vibraphone or glockenspiel), one on snare drum and one on timpani.

2. Auditionees younger than 10th grade in the 2008-09 school year must prepare two solos (2-3 minutes) that demonstrate technical and artistic ability.  One solo must be on a keyboard instrument and another on either snare drum or timpani.

3. The Youth Symphony will provide audition instruments (timpani, marimba, snare etc.). Auditionees are required to bring mallets to the audition.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

All students in 10th grade or higher in the 2008-09 school year will be considered for the Symphony Orchestra.
